What is a Dermatologist?

A dermatologist is a physician who specializes in the treatment of skin conditions and diseases. Dermatologists are Medical Doctors certified by the American Board of Dermatology after graduating from medical school and completing a three year accredited dermatology residency. They treat everything from minor skin rashes, chronic skin diseases, (such as eczema or psoriasis), moles, other benign and precancerous lesions, and skin cancer. Dermatologists are great skin diagnosticians and can distinguish between skin conditions that share similar symptoms better than other physicians trained in other medical specialties. Today, many dermatologists are also well versed in cosmetic dermatology procedures to help improve the appearance of skin as we age.
