Identifying Skin Cancer

Everyone experiences changes in their skin over time like moles, acne and marks, but there are a few characteristics of skin growths that could indicate a problem that needs treatment. The American Academy of Dermatology suggests that patients follow what is called the ABCDES test to determine if a skin growth is problematic:
  • A Is the mole asymmetric? (The shape on one side doesn’t match the other)
  • B What does the border look like? (If the border is irregular or bumpy get it checked out)
  • C Does the growth have different colors?
  • D Is the growth more than a quarter of an inch wide?
  • E Is there an evolution in the way it looks?
  • S Are there any strange symptoms associated with the growth, like bleeding or pain?
If the answer to any or all of these questions is yes, it’s best to schedule an appointment at Buckeye Dermatology with Dr. Cruz, Dr. Hessel, Dr. Shen, Dr. Hearne or Dr. Carlson to get it checked out as soon as possible.
