Seborrheic Dermatitis

Itchy, inflamed and flaky skin condition appearing on oil-rich areas like the face and scalp.

What is it?

Seborrheic dermatitis is a relatively common skin disorder typified by inflamed, scaly, itchy and flaky skin predominantly on the scalp. It can also affect other oily parts of the body such as the face, chest, and back.

Seborrheic dermatitis tends to stick around for a long time. The precise cause is still a mystery, though it's thought to be linked to a yeast named Malassezia that resides on the skin or an inflammatory reaction to oil-rich skin. The symptoms often vary in intensity and may even vanish temporarily, only to recur later. Seborrheic dermatitis generally isn't harmful, but it can cause discomfort and may lead to self-consciousness for some patients.

How is it treated?

While there's no absolute cure for Seborrheic dermatitis, the team at Buckeye Dermatology can offer you treatment strategy to control and relieve the symptoms. Regular consultations can help keep track of the progress and effectiveness of treatments, which may consist of topical antifungals, corticosteroid creams, lotions, or shampoos.

For some patients, lifestyle modifications like stress reduction and a thorough skincare routine can further help manage flare-ups. After an examination, our board-certified providers will offer specific advice tailored to your skin type and condition intensity. Visit us in Springfield, Grove City or Dublin, Ohio to get relief from your seborrheic dermatitis.
